Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

In April, the children were much ready to find out more about the Mesozoic Era. It is the ‘Age of Reptiles’. The three Mesozoic Periods are, Triassic Period, Jurassic Period, and Cretaceous Period.

During the first half of the Triassic, dinosaurs were not the ones ruling the Earth. The Archosaurs, were known as the ‘ruling reptiles’, a carnivore, were crocodile-like predators on land, but they were not dinosaurs. The Triassic Period was the beginning of dinosaurs evolving and roaming around the Earth. Those dinosaurs had names that are hard to pronounce. We had lots of fun trying to sound it phonetically, checking on Google for the right pronounciation.

The children were excited to find out how the Pangaea began to spilt into two during the mid-Triassic. They participated in the discussion on how volcanoes erupting created earthquakes, resulting land mass to split and moved. The preschoolers now understand why the Mesozoic Era contained three different periods. The beginning of a new period meant the end of the previous. The end of a period also brought upon the extinction of some species that could not survive. However, evolution made some creatures bigger and stronger.

Sauropods are giagantic herbivorous dinosaurs that lived during the late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods. The children were able to name some common ones – Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus. They were amazed by the length of a Brachiosaurus that could grow up to 26 metres long, and Diplodocus was one metre longer.

We are experiencing warmer weather now than before. The kids learned that during the prehistoric time, the climate was hotter and wetter than it is today. Carbon dioxide levels and sea levels were also higher than now. However, oxygen levels is much lower, far below than today’s 21 percent. The children understand that if we don’t start taking care of our Earth now, we will be suffering from the bad climate, and we might be the ones who extinct in the future.

四月份的主题是最让孩子们兴奋和感兴趣华文主题课之一,孩子们学习了如何辨别“食肉恐龙”与“食草恐龙”,通过观察多种恐龙图片,其中有些也是幼儿耳熟能详的(之前有学习过的恐龙),我们告诉孩子们如何从它们的身型特征,牙齿,还有它们的爪子来辨别他们;同时,通过比较头和身体的比例,如果头骨的比例超过了身体的一半就是食肉恐龙,相反如果头骨的比例没有达到身体的一半就是食草恐龙。我们准备了一些恐龙的3d卡片,在上面可以显示出来恐龙吃草或是吃肉,幼儿很激动又认真的去观看并会主动去积极发言,结合上面动态的卡片说出自己所看到的。

利用主题课我们还教授孩子如何用简短的华文词汇来表达更为复杂的含义,从而帮助他们如何应用到看图造句里,因为这是小学阶段学习华文的重点之一。例如:甲龙的头像带了一个钢铁般的头盔,尾巴直如铁棒,尾锤与众不同等。我们也学习了部分简单的华文字,孩子们会在课上跟着老师一起数笔划,从而加深对学过知识的理解,这些字包括三角、甲、霸王、鹦鹉、嘴、尾巴、牙齿、草、肉等。这种结合孩子们的兴趣点来传授华文字,可以起到事半功倍的效果。我们希望通过一系列的活动让孩子们了解一些恐龙的种类、形态及生活习性等知识,也让他们将这种探究延申到课外,培养孩子们知识的持久兴趣,激发他们主动探索大自然的奥秘。

Thematic Updates for Lower Preschooler Class (3 yrs old) & Toddler Class

Stomp, stomp , stomp, are our children coming back and talking about all the land dinosaurs?  Yes,  you are right.  April thematic topic is all about dinosaurs on land, our children learnt to recognise four different dinosaurs e.g. Apatosaurus, velociraptor, triceratops, tyrannosaurus rex. They learnt about the dinosaurs names, features and sizes,  children also learnt what the dinosaurs diet were, e.g. large meat, plants. From the classes, the knowledge on how dinosaurs lived on this planet as all the living animals were imparted to our children, so they had a better understanding even there are no living dinosaurs now.

Children had great fun learning about the dinosaur’s features e.g.  teeth, jaws, claws and even some dinosaurs had flexible necks. During a fun egg hunting game, our children enjoyed the hunting for the eggs and were extremely happy when they found the eggs. They also had great fun dipping their fingers in the paint to do some finger painting. Activities are always the best way to impart knowledge to our children.

Apart from the above thematic classes, our children also learnt about the festival of April which is Good Friday, and how the day is celebrated.  We told Good Friday stories to our children which helped them know more, our children would like to share these stories with others.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

This March, we continue to discuss on some different types of pterosaurs during the prehistoric time. Children learned that bats and flying squirrels in the present day have membrane spread out as wings similar to a pterosaur. The children were especially curious about the size of the pterosaurs. They learned how to use a measuring tape and read the measurement of the length of some pterosaurs. They were astonished to find out that some of the pterosaurs were as big as one of our classroom. They also learned to compare the size of some prehistoric flying reptiles with some birds of the present day.

Our children were amazed by how different scientists worked together to find out much information of those prehistoric animals just by studying on fossils. They could even provide us with information on their diet and habitat. Compared to million years ago, the seas were full of giant reptiles. Do you know that sea turtles are the only reptile that live in the seas now? The Devonian period is called the Ages of Fishes. There were thousands of weird fish that began to take over the seas about 400 million years ago. There was a heavily armoured fish, the Dunkleosteus, grew to a length of 6 metres long, which was about the size of an elephant. All of us have a set of dentin-and-enamel in our body, which was the scale of the Dunkleosteus – our teeth!

Have you ever heard of the Magalodon? Its name means “mighty tooth”. Each of its tooth is half the size of an A4 paper. Scientists estimated that the length of a Magalodon is about 18 metres long, about 3 elephants standing in a row. The first large reptile in the ocean was Ichthyosaur. “Ichthy” means ‘fish’ and “saur” means ‘lizard’. Sea reptile did not lay eggs to reproduce. Fossils found showed a baby ichthyosaur emerging from its mother. All marine reptiles did not have gills. They breathe with lungs.

The children will move on to learn about the land animals during the prehistoric time.

在三月的华文主题课程中,我们的孩子学习了海洋里的“恐龙”,其实通过学习他们知道了这些并不是真正的“恐龙”,除了他们都有自己的名字之外,他们还都有一个共同的名字–“海洋爬行动物”。孩子们通过观察了解它们的外形特征、生活习性,和牙齿的作用;同时, 孩子们通过做比较(哪一个海洋爬行动物的牙齿长、哪一个尾巴短)来辨别不同的恐龙, 并会用华文表达“尖尖的、圆圆的、长长的一类词语”。我们还观看了有关于海洋爬行动物的视频,通过真实的纪实记录,孩子们在边看边观察的过程中也学习了它们是怎样来捕捉食物?了解到海洋爬行动物还会吞一些“石头”来消化自己肚子里的食物。由于这是幼儿很感兴趣的学习内容,所以整个月活动中大部分孩子们都能积极讨论,大胆发言。另外,孩子们还学习跟华文“龙”相关的词语和句子,通过他们加深孩子对所学知识的记忆。

Are our children coming back and naming all the different sea reptiles?  Yes, March topic is about sea reptiles. Our children learned four different kinds of sea reptiles, they are mosasaur, plesiosaur, ichthyosaur and shastasaurus.  They started by watching a short video on the top 10 largest sea reptiles to have an idea on what are the sea reptiles and how they look. like Our children also learned more about each sea reptiles e.g. features and diet. They were very eager to know even more about the sea reptiles and were asking questions and shared with their peers. The children also did a creative learning lesson by drawing the plesiosaur long neck and small head and also shared it with their peers.  Game of “name me” is what our children like the most, through the game they were able to name  the sea reptiles when It was pointed out. The game is very helpful to our children in their language and cognitive development, knowledge is strengthened in a more creative way.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

Fossils, paleontologists, pre-historic period, evolution. Our children are learning more of our prehistoric Earth. How simple cells evolved to much more complicated living organisms and creatures, over hundreds millions of years. We discussed about how scientists gather information from fossils, environment, make hypothesis, and provide us with information about what they found out.

Scientists also found out that, even land plants took a few hundred millions of years to evolve and adapt to the life on land. Children learned that there was no soil before, and it was the growing and dying of plants that developed soil, which then became deep enough for plants with longer roots to get adapted and grow.

Since the sea was too crowded, fish found their way to survive by moving to the land too. They started spending more time out of water and on land. By 360 million years ago, there were now many types of fishy creatures with legs and lungs. Some live on land most of the time, but returned to water to keep their skin moist and to lay eggs. They evolved into amphibians. And do you know that some amphibians continued to evolved in to reptiles?

However, around 250 million years ago, the Earth was hit by the worst mass extinction, scientists called it the Great Dying. However, after the Great Dying, reptiles were some of the first survivors to bounce back in a big way. They evolved to be bigger, stronger and tougher. During the age of dinosaur, the skies were ruled by the pterosaurs – the Preondactylus (PRAY-ON-DAK-TIE-LUS) and Dimorphodon (di-MOR-fo-don) were among the many pterosaur fossils found.

We will continue to explore the prehistoric world further in the following month.

 

二月的主题课程中,孩子们都还沉浸在新年欢乐的氛围中,新年过后我与孩子们一起回顾讨论新年,鼓励并让每位幼儿大胆站出来与小朋友分享新年期间的事情,拜年时要讲一些祝福的话语。还有给幼儿讲解一些南北方不同的习俗,例如:北方会吃饺子,南方会吃汤圆,火锅。接下来就要开启我们的恐龙之旅,恐龙本身对大班的小朋友就充满了吸引力和神秘感,是大班孩子很喜欢的一种动物,经常能听他们在看书的时候讨论、电视上看过的恐龙是什么样子的?所以我们主要学习了从恐龙蛋宝宝延伸到长大以后的恐龙,但是对于恐龙的年代和环境以及它喜欢吃的食物、以及它们飞行的本领都不太了解。所以这个月我们学习的是—飞行的恐龙,让幼儿了解并知道恐龙在天空中是如何飞行?它们出现在什么时期?有些恐龙的身上的特征对飞行发挥了什么作用?它们是如何捕食?等等。学习过程中我们让每个孩子都大胆想象、讨论和发言,充分调动他们的积极性。此外,我们还学习了琥珀的由来。

Let’s welcome February after the Chinese New Year break, the children started off the month by sharing with their peers how they celebrated Chinese New Year with their families.  They also did a recap on their favourite dinosaurs.  The children focusedon “Dinosaurs on air ( names, features, sizes) . They started by watching a video on different kind of air dinosaurs to have a basic understanding on what are air dinosaurs and what are their names and features e.g. ( Dimorphodon, Pteranodon, pterosaurs). They had an awareness and fun learning and exploring about how different each air dinosaur is different from each other in their diet and features  e.g.  Dimorphodon e.g. tail ,brain ,eyes ,skull, and teeth  Diet:  fish, squid, and small reptiles, Pteranodon e.g. body, beak, back, head Diet e.g. fish eater only .  The children were gathered in the music room for some music and movement they acted like a Pteranodon; they also did some finger printing activities on the air dinosaurs and enjoyed dipping their fingers in the paint. Children did a matching puzzle game using the handmade puzzle which helped children to develop their cognitive skills while trying to match the dinosaur body parts together. Children volunteered themselves out to share with their peers about what they have understood about air dinosaurs, they were able to share and enjoyed showing the action on how the air dinosaurs grabbed their food with their large beaks

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

A very Happy New Year to all parents! 2019 is a new beginning for all the children in the preschooler class. This year, we will be traveling back in time, to learn about the prehistoric time of our Earth and the creatures that exist on this planet during that time.

 

We began by looking at how planet Earth was like, long millions of years ago. Children were surprised to find out that Earth was a lifeless rock and filled with poisonous gas. The Earth changed over time and was then filled with volcanoes and lava everywhere. We found out that first life on Earth was just a single cell and cells evolved into much more complicated life forms and many other living organism. Earth turned frozen all of a sudden for at least 200 million years. However, snow and ice on Snowball Earth melted, and our Earth revived!

 

Children learned that there were no written records, drawings, no photos or videos, as there were no human being at that time. All these information came from scientists who studied the prehistoric past. These scientists include the paleontologists, geologists, botanists and many others. Evidences were gathered mainly from fossils and rocks. The children studied and compared the different types of fossils from some library books.

 

It is Chinese New Year soon. Did you involve your kids in spring cleaning for your home? They might have a few good tips for you! Have you brought your kids to Chinatown to experience the busy street market and buy some Chinese New Year goodies? Our children are all prepared for the festival. They have learned many auspicious greeting from the teachers and were practising for the special occasion. They couldn’t wait to visit their relatives, cousins and friends, and taste all the Chinese New Year goodies! Wishing all a Prosperous and Happy Lunar New Year!

Happy new year to all the parents, the children welcomed 2019 by welcoming their new peers and sharing what they did for new year during their holidays. They were welcomed by their teachers with a fun theme for the month of January “ Introduction of Jurassic world”. The children started of by an introduction on Jurassic world they watched a video “Sanger academy” they had a basic understanding of Jurassic world. After the children learned to explore and have an awareness of different kind of dinosaurs e.g. land, water, air.  They had a fun activity to develop their gross motor skills to pretend to stomp around like a dinosaur around the classroom. They had fun recognizing their favourite dinosaurs and learned the dinosaurs names and habits this helps the children to improve their cognitive development and language development. They enjoyed sharing with their peers what dinosaurs they have chosen, they children also did a fun activity by joining the body parts of a dinosaurs handmade puzzle, they were able to join the puzzles with their peers motivation.

The children were introduced with Chinese new year celebration, did your children come home asking you what zodiac animal were u born in? yes!   they learned the 12 Chinese zodiac animals and what zodiac year is 2019, they also learn what zodiac are they born in too. They did craft work using red packets and learned the Chinese new year song “gong xi gong xi” using musical instruments e.g. drums, hand bells. They enjoyed sharing with their peers about their Chinese new year dress code and what are the going to do.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

 

In October, the preschoolers learned about the force of wind – how useful could wind be to our life, and how wind could cause disasters and damages. From the recent newspaper cuttings, the children read and discussed about Typhoon Jebi, Hurricane Florence and Typhoon Mungkut that happened in the different parts of the world. They learned that typhoons and hurricanes are the same type of storm. The only difference is the locations that they happened in.

 

From the book, “The Boy who Harnessed the Wind”, the preschoolers learned about the usefulness of wind. They now understand that wind could drive generator to produce electricity and bring water to remote places.

 

We also talked about floods, earthquakes, tsunami and landslides that occurred during this period of time. The children showed great empathy towards the victims at the affected places. They were concerned about where would these people live when their houses were destroyed? Were their family members hurt? How would they rebuild their homes? Where do they get their clothes and food?

 

When we discussed about how the disastrous wind was formed, the children could relate back to the lessons taught earlier. It was the rising of warm air that created the weather phenomenon. We listed out some possible causes that resulted in global climate warming, the children also suggested some useful points. Please support your children when they request for:

  • Walk to any destination that is within walking distance.
  • Use public transport instead of driving.
  • Do not use the air conditioner during cool weather.
  • Unplug electronic devices or power plugs not in use.
  • The use of recycled bags instead of plastic bags during shopping.

We are unable to stop global warming in a short time. We could put in our best effort and do our part to make the world a better place for our future generations.

Hello parents let’s reduce, reuse and recycle in the month of October the children learned how to recycle (energy & environment) to save my world.

 

The children started by sharing what can they do with used papers, cartons, and plastic bottles and the also watch a short video on recycling after the children had a better understanding what is recycling and why is recycling important they did a hand print using the colour green and blue, because green represent clean and green and blue for the globe. They had so much fun doing the handprint and had a basic understanding on why are the coloured used.

 

Children created their own recycling Corner using recycling boxes, they painted their boxes in groups and labelled them plastic bottles, papers and cans.  They had so much of fun collecting all the recycling items and sorting them out in the boxes. They also learned what are the 3Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.  The children also learned that they can reuse and recycle some items and turn it to a fun game. E.g. aim the right cup , using paper cups and pin pong balls.  

 

The children also learned what will happen if they don’t start recycling and what happen to the sea creatures because of throwing all the plastic , paper and  glasses into the sea they watched a short video and had a understanding that recycling is very important.  Parents can encourage your children to throw unwanted papers, cartons, plastic bottles into the recycle bin.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

In the month of September, the preschoolers had fun playing while learning about light. First, the learned about the importance of the Sun, and how it not only affects the routine of day and night, the weather, but also our vision.

 

Through different experiments and shadow play, the children learned that the length and size of a shadow depended on the position and distance of light sources. They also understood better that objects that are opaque block light sources and create shadows. Objects that are transparent allow light to pass through and coloured materials that are transparent create coloured shadow.

 

The children discussed about how people in the past see or move around during the night when there is no electricity and light bulb now. We tried using torchlight and lit up a candle in a dim room, but they knew that they are not supposed to read under such dim light sources.

 

Now, the children understood better that light travels in a straight line. Although light looks white, it actually contains 7 colours, the colours in a rainbow. Many children did not know that moon doesn’t give out its own light but it brightens up in the night sky by reflecting the light from the Sun. They also understood better that the Sun, is just a gigantic sphere of burning hot gas, and stars are same like the Sun, but they are either too small or too far away from Earth, that’s why they look very tiny from Earth.

The children learn about the three states of matter ( light).

They started by exploring the room why is the room bright and what give as that brightness.  After the children have a better understanding about light they had a short story time ‘why can’t we see in the dark’.

After they have a clear and better understanding, the children wanted  to explore more and  they played a game called ‘Can you catch my shadow’. They had a lot of fun trying to catch their friends’ shadows and they had learnt that they need light to create and see their shadows.

After all the fun exploring about light they learned light also give us energy and sun is a form of light in the day and the stars and moon give us light at night.  

For music and movement, the children learned a new song ‘This little light’. They had fun singing and dancing in the music room. 

Apart from the lesson, the children had a fun time celebrating the mooncake festival. They made their own moon cake and lantern using recycled materials e.g. milk carton, chop stick, strings and candles.

The story was shared why we celebrate mooncake festival.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

Dear parents, have you been nagging at your kids to save water in the past, and now, they are doing it to you instead? In the month of August, the preschoolers discussed and learned about the other state of matter – water.

 

The children are now aware that there is only 3% of fresh water on Earth we could use for consumption, and the demand is higher than supply in the whole world, especially in Singapore. We are living on a small island with limited natural resources. We use clean, fresh water for flushing, washing, bathing, farming, cooking and drinking in our daily life. Children learned that Singapore has 17 reservoirs that collect rain water, and NEWater process recycles our treated used water into ultra-clean, high-grade reclaimed water, cushioning our water supply against dry weather and moving Singapore towards water sustainability.

 

Not all people in the world have the luxury of clean drinking water like us in Singapore. The children showed great empathy towards those living in under developed countries who need to get their drinking water from muddy rivers, underground water source and even polluted rivers and water sources with lots trash, which make them suffer from sickness very often.

 

We did a few experiments with water. The children had better understanding that containers of different sizes affect how it could trick our eyes and look more or lesser than one another when compared, although the volume of water in the containers are the same. With ice cubes and hot water, the children learned how water changes its forms into solid, liquid or gas, linking it to the water cycle.

 

The children learned the importance and effects of water pollution and conservation. We could do our part to protect our world’s most precious natural resource. Water is precious! Save water!

 

 

Thematic Updates for Lower Preschooler Class (3 yrs old) & Toddler Class

 

Children started the month by learning all about national day. They were introduced to different cultures and races in Singapore, children were brought out for a walk in the neighbourhood to show them the colourful decoration and explain to them why the decorations were there. They played a game ‘Can you spot the Singapore flag’, they were very keen and enthusiastic in spotting the flag to share with their peers.

 

After the national day break, children explored one of the three states of matter – water. They started by watching a short video on why water is useful e.g. sea creatures need water, human need water to drink, planting, cleaning. After they have a better understanding on water children did a fun planting activity by using beans, plastic cup and cotton, they watered the plant everyday and observed how the plant grows. They were very happy to see the cycle of the plant growth each day when they watered it.

 

Children also learn about the water temperature e.g. hot, cold and room temperature, they must deep their hands into the tub to feel different water temperature. Children understood water is very important in our daily life and we shouldn’t  waste water. They also learned that they have to turn off the tap after used and turn on the tap in a low pressure.  

 

For music and movement, they had a fun time learning a new song ‘If all of the rain drops’.  Apart from the lesson, children decorated their family pictures  with stickers and use the family picture to introduce their family members to their peers.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

Air is everywhere. Did your little ones go around the house catching air with a plastic bag? We were learning all about air this month. Through experiments, the children learned that air takes up space and could obstruct water or things from moving forward. They also experienced that air moves in all directions, at different speed – fast or slow. Although they could not see air, they could feel air.

 

The children now understand that different weather temperature – warm or cold, is affected by the Sun. The Sun makes warm air rises, making the weather warm, but create rain clouds. Heavy rain clouds make cool air sinks, making the air cool when blocking the Sun and raindrops fall to cool the Earth.

 

The children learned that air surrounds and protect the Earth like a huge, thick blanket. Without air, all living things can’t live. More plants in the environment improve the quality of air through photosynthesis. Animals and humans take in the oxgen released by the plants during photosynthesis. In order to maintain the quality of air, we need to grow more plants. The children also suggested to recycle more instead of using more new resources.

 

Please do support your children in any ways that you can. Let’s reduce, reuse and recycle to create a better world for living for the younger generations.

 

 

Thematic Updates for Lower Preschooler Class (3 yrs old) & Toddler Class

 

After a break from June revision, the children explored about the three states of matter (Air). They started to explore air through a breathing exercise and have an understanding that air is all around us. The children learn air in a fun and exciting way by blowing the fire off the candle and blowing bubbles they had so much fun blowing. They had a better understanding that a strong wind can blow off anything and they also learn that air can be felt and not seen.

 

When the children had a better understanding on Air, they learned the differences between cold air and hot air. The children were gathered to a cold room with air-con turned on and allowing them to feel the cold air. Later, they were brought out to feel the hot air from a hair –dryer. They were able to differentiate the cold air and hot air.

 

To make the lesson more interesting for our younger preschoolers and toddlers, the children were introduced to some air-transport that they may be familiar with. e.g.  Airplanes, Hot Air Balloons, Helicopters, Rockets.

 

Apart from the lesson, the children celebrated racial harmony in a fun way by trying different cultures food and they learned how to respect different cultures and races. They also learned how to greet good morning in 4 different languages, they had so much fun knowing different cultures, costumes, food , language and music.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

Healthy Eating, Healthy Lifestyle! This month, we focused on the importance of the right choice of food for our daily meals. The children tried planning their meals with ‘My Healthy Plate’, designed by HPB especially for Singaporeans, My Healthy Plate is a friendly, easy-to-understand visual guide for creating balanced and healthy meals. It shows you what to eat in the right amounts for each meal, so that you can plan your portions accordingly.

 

 The children understood that they must fill half of their plate with fruit and vegetables as these food are naturally low in saturated and trans fat, rich in dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals. They can help lower the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. The preschoolers made a trip to the market to learn more about the different types of vegetables available, and to buy some vegetables to make salad toss. Before we went, the older kids planned their shopping list. At the market, they chose and paid for the fruit and vegetables. Back in school, all children took turns to wash and prepare the vegetables for the salad. During lunch, they ate the salad that they made, fresh and crunchy! Although not all children enjoyed the salad, they finished all portion served! Did they request to make salad with you at home? Encourage them to do so!

 

Children know that choosing whole-grains over refined grains means getting all the goodness that reduces the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, while helping with weight management since you’ll feel full for longer. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are great sources of calcium. Make water your drink of choice. It quenches thirst better than sugar-sweetened beverages.

 

With all the food to choose from daily, it helps when we make the right choices to stay well-nourished. After all, no single food can provide all the nutrients our body needs – we require a wide var​​iety of food, taken in moderation, in the right balance, daily. In addition to eating healthy, being physically active is essential to maintaining good health.

 

We would take a short holiday break in June, while the K1 and K2 would focus on their project work. We will see you back in July for the next thematic update.

 

 

Thematic Updates for Lower Preschooler Class (3 yrs old) & Toddler Class

 

Month of May was a healthy and fun month for the children, they started off by sharing what are their favourite fruits and food, children were introduced to the healthy plate to have a better understanding on how to  have a balance diet by adding meat & alternatives, vegetables, fruits,  brown rice & alternatives and using less oil.

The children also understood that they must eat 3 meals and must not skip their meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also learn how to avoid being obese by exercising and keep themselves fit, by playing at the playground or dancing is a form of exercise too. 

They learn healthy eating in a exciting way by making their own fruit salad, the children added yogurt, apple, blueberries and grapes. The children understood they have to wash the fruits before making & eating the fruit salad. They enjoyed eating the fresh fruit salad with a mixture of sweetness and sourness.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

This month, the preschoolers continue to explore on their body. First, we talked about gender differences and ways to protect their body. We discussed on how they could deal and react to strangers, with gifts and other irresistible temptations. They should be daring to reject any requests. They were encouraged to voice out and refuse to be touched when they feel any touch that is unusual and causes discomfort. This is to educate them about privacy of their body.

 

Next, we move on to our body structure. They have a better understanding on how the bones and muscles form the shape of our body. Through simple exercises, they learned about the flexibility of different body parts and how each part could move around.

 

We then moved on to talk about the structure and function of the respiratory system. Through a simple experiments and observations, the preschoolers have a better understanding on how our lungs inhale and exhale air. They could even tell you that we inhale oxygen-rich air and exhale carbon dioxide.

 

Get your kids to show you the size of their heart. Do you know how? They will show you their tiny fist and might pester you to do so. Grab your fist together. That’s the size of your heart. Compare the difference in size – big and small.

 

The children eat at least 4 meals a day. Where do the food they eat travel to? We made a journey to the digestive system. We discussed about the function of the stomach, small intestine and large intestine and the process of digestion.

 

There is still so much to explore and learn. We will continue our journey next month for a healthier body.

April was an active month for the three years old & toddler class they have so much of fun learning about body functions and hygiene. The children started of with music and movement singing “ head, shoulder, knees and toes, they start to explore more about their body function by playing the “ Balancing game “ and “ Simon says”. The children also learn body function in a fun way by drawing their foot prints and naming it my “ Happy foot” they were to answer some questions e.g. “ why is it my happy foot”. The children also learn that body is private and what are safe and unsafe touch.

 

The children learned about the importance of personal hygiene they were introduced how to keep their body parts clean. By trimming their finger/toe nails, how to avoid smelly feet by washing their feet clean and changing their socks every day, they also learn that they have to change and wash their clothes every day to keep themselves clean.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

In the month of March, the preschoolers learned more about the organs found on their head. They studied the basic structure of human brain, discussed about the function of each part and how it works to control our action and movement, helps us to learn and remember things, helping us to express our emotional feelings, what to do during playtime and creativity for art activities. They learned that the best way to keep their brain healthy is to sleep more.

 

We then moved on to the other organs on our head, discussed about the structure and functions of each. They learned the importance of proper eye care, keeping their reading or screen time to only a maximum of 30 minutes, and taking a 15 minutes break to rest their eyes after each session. Are they applying this rule at home? They know that the best way to relax our eyes is to look at things that are green, and they should go and play outdoor to prevent myopia. They did not forget to care for people with visual disability too. Promising to lend out their helping hands when they were to meet one.

 

The children learned that sound waves travel through our ear canal, leading to the ear drum helping us hear. The preschoolers were aware of people with disabilities in hearing and talking, understood that these people communicate using sign language and lip reading.

 

“Always cover your nose when you sneeze!” The preschooler now understand better why they need to do so. When we sneeze, our body expels air, germs, and moisture through the mouth and nose, traveling far enough to make others sick.

 

Now the children know that our tongue don’t just taste food. It has the feeling of touch too, helping us to feel if our food is hot or cold! They also learned about oral hygiene and the proper way of teeth brushing. They know that they should brush at least twice a day, and not to eat anything after brushing.  Let’s keep up the good habit for a healthy set of teeth!

March was a fabulous and exciting month for 3 years old & toddler class they have so much of fun learning about head functions of facial parts and personal hygiene. The children started of to learn how to differentiate their facial parts e.g. (eyes, mouth, nose, ears, eyebrows and eyelashes.) the children start to explore more about themselves in the mirror, they point to their facial parts and answer some questions “what do you see in the mirror” “where are your eyes, nose , mouth”. The children learn facial parts in a fun way by designing their own “happy face” on the bread they use wholemeal bread, blueberries and bananas to create the “happy face”.

 

The children learned about the importance of personal hygiene they were introduced how to keep their facial parts clean. By washing their hands after outdoor play or after using the toilet and by brushing their teeth to avoid cavities and washing their hair to avoid lice they also learn how to take good care of their eyes to avoid wearing specs they enjoy the book “scott see-well’s bright ideas” they also learn to use a tissue to blow their nose and not to dig their nose using their finger to avoid bleeding.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

February was another exciting month for the preschoolers. Chinese New Year celebration! Spring cleaning, preparation, decoration, reunion dinner, visiting relatives and friends, festive goodies, Chinatown, firecrackers, lion dance and receiving red packets! Our preschoolers learned about customs and traditions of Chinese New Year, the 12 Chinese Zodiac that is associated with our birth year. They not only learned auspicious greetings for family visiting, but also proper manners and behaviours to exhibit during visiting.

 

Back from the Chinese New Year holidays, we talked about friendship and how to manage it. The children learned about the importance of sharing, kindness and tolerant. We also discussed about the different ways to show and control their emotions, how to deal with physical and verbal bullying through stories.

 

This month, we included people with special needs in our lesson. The children were introduced to the condition of Down Syndrome and Autism. To our innocent and kind children, they couldn’t tell that these children with special needs shown in the books are any different from them by their appearance. Our society is now much receptive towards people with special needs. With inclusion in formal schooling, they may find a few in their circle of life in the future. Therefore, we see the need to prepare our children on this aspect, to have an idea of what they could do when they ever meet any children with special needs. Hopefully they could be receptive and make friends with these kids, instead of avoiding them.

February is a happening month for all. The kids have been introduced to items found during Chinese New Year – Lion dance, Dragon dance, goodies, mandarin oranges, greeting words we said, traditional customs and etc.

Chinese New Year songs are introduced to the kids and they did more on role-playing on greetings.

The kids are amazed by the fire-crackers, lion & dragon dances when they viewed them on video. 

Our kids also took an opportunity to look at the real lion dances when they came to our neighbourhood.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

A very Happy New Year to all parents! 2018. A new beginning for all the children in the preschooler class. The children started off by learning more about themselves. We talked about their birthday, learned how to read a calendar, their stage of growth and how they were born. They then learned more about their family members – who their maternal and paternal grandparents are, do their parents have any siblings. They learned how they should address each family member appropriately. Children of different age group then drew their own potrait, their family and family tree respectively.

 

Do you know how many bones are there in each of our hands? Would you like to ask your child for an answer? We discussed and talked about the main structure and functions of our limbs, sense of touch and how it helps us in our daily life. We also talked about the functions of our fingerprints, help us to grip on things, for identification purposes when we travel overseas. The children learned that all fingerprints are different, even their own pair of hands.

 

This year, we have included people with disabilities in our lessons. This is to raise children’s awareness towards the less fortunates in our society, educating them to be a more caring and helpful person. The children read reports and storybook on two of Singapore’s paralympics winners – Jason Chee and Yip Pin Xiu. From them, the children learned that they perservere to continue what they started off, persist to keep trying, work hard and not give up easily, feel confident and think positive even they have disabilities, and most importantly, do their best whenever they can, and not to look down on themselves!

The younger preschooler and toddler class started off in getting know about themselves in terms of their names, gender, ages, appearances and differences.

We have show and tell session for children who brought in their family photos. Each child took turns to point and introduce their family members to their classmates.

Their confidence level in speaking up in class improved when we practised show and tell every alternate days. 

Music & movement: ‘Hello, how are you?’, ‘The more we get together’, ‘Haha this a way’, ‘This is the way’.

The younger preschooler has lots of hands-on opportunity in class to improve their self-help skills – opening and closing door & various bottles, putting on socks & gloves, dry pouring and spooning, buttoning and unbuttoning, zipping and unzipping, dressing and undressing themselves.

Thematic Updates for Preschooler Class

 

November was such a busy month for the children. On top of their daily lessons, they were also practicing hard for their performances for our annual Family Day. Hope that you have enjoyed the performances put up by our children.

 

Using ‘My Healthy Plate’, we continue to emphasize on the importance of a balanced diet and the types of food they could include in their meals. The children learned classification of vegetables according to the colours, and parts of a plant that we eat. They also get to see some different other types of grains, other than the usual white and brown rice. The children tried planning their meal from a variety of food selection. Some of them did included some deep fried food, sweets, candies and soft drinks in their menu, but they understand that these are unhealthy food. They would only eat them once in a while, in moderation.

 

Our preschoolers learned that Singapore is a small island, with limited land and natural resources. We discussed about the food sources in Singapore and where different varieties of food are import from. They understood that they should only take what they could finish to avoid food wastage.

 

From newspaper cuttings, the preschoolers learned that some hotel, school, hawker centres, and shopping malls in Singapore are experimenting on recycling food waste into useful resources using food-waste digester, turning food waste into compost or fertilizers for plants.

The children learned to identify the names of the various food and learned the consequences of taking too much of certain food. 

Through real life objects, they also about the mathematical terms such as long and short , big and small.

They  learned to sort different fruits into 2 different bags. In the above activity, they also learned to take turns .

They also had fun making cookies out of playdough and making a cake using recycled materials. 

The children also have fun colouring their healthy plate that shows the portion of food that they need to eat. 

Last but not least they learned to sort and count the different sweets.

The children have fun and at the same time learning the concepts. 

Songs:  hot cross buns, pat a cake, pea porridge hot, old mother hubbard, hey diddle diddle, Do u know the muffin man, alphabet soup, who stole the cookie from the cookie jar.
